Exploding Bacon’s New Robot

We are happy to have helped Exploding Bacon for the second year in a row with the manufacturing of their robot. Exploding Bacon is a 4-H club that participates in FIRST robotics. Last year, their challenge was to design a robot that could successfully shoot basketballs. This year the challenge is to shoot frisbees. Below is a vlog posted by Exploding Bacon discussing what they are up to and showing a glimpse of them assembling the robot. Magnus Hi-Tech Industries Inc, operating since 1965, is an established world-class precision fabricator serving a diversified customer base. Markets served include Aerospace, Defense, Space Operations, Medical, and a variety of commercial applications. We also take great pride in serving our community and getting involved with education. Recently Magnus Hi-Tech was involved in a very unique and exciting manufacturing project that involved manufacturing parts for a robot being built by a team of students. To celebrate the success of this project a barbecue lunch was provided along with a demonstration of “Magnus Porkus.” Magnus Porkus is a robot designed by Exploding Bacon, who are a 4-H club that participate in FIRST robotics. Each year, the team is challenged to design a robot that will compete against other robots from around the country to achieve a specific task. This year, the challenge was to build a robot that could shoot basketballs. The robot is maneuvered from a remote control that is connect either through an ethernet cable or wirelessly, and with a top speed of 18 ft/sec, Magnus Porkus was amongst the quickest in competition. As seen in the photos below, ‘Porkus has a function which allows basketballs to be pulled from the floor and up its vertical conveyor belt, which ultimately leads to an opening at the top of the machine that launches the basketball into the air. Exploding bacon (Team 1902), the team who designed the machine, is a group of mostly high school students. Though they have mentors to help when needed, the students do most of the work. The team mentors are mostly engineers from companies such as Lockheed Martin and Walt Disney amongst others. Magnus Hi-Tech is proud to have sponsored the group by manufacturing much of body. Machining a complex slot on our 5 axis mill

There’s no such such thing as a slot being to complicated for a 5-axis mill.

We used a Hawkeye Precision Borescope attached to a Canon T2i to show the customer a notch that was added inside of a thread to act as clearance. Below is a before and after picture of the cut.
